Iron ores are available in a wide range of forms and concentrates for different categories and applications. Our concentrates are mainly used in the forms of pellets and powders for production of steel.
Iron ore is essential for the production of steel, which in turn is essential in maintaining a strong industrial base. 98% of our mined iron ore is used to make steel. Iron is one of the most abundant metallic elements. Its oxides, or ores, make up about 5% of the earth’s crust.
We are among the ten largest producers of iron ore. With a geographically diversified portfolio of iron ore and coal assets, we are strategically positioned to serve our customer’s plants.
We are active throughout the whole mining value chain – from exploration and development, to mining itself, concentration, pelletizing, rail transportation and port operations. We supply ores to steel manufacturers until the finished products are made. Our mining operations extend from iron ore and coal mining to providing a full range of raw materials for production of steel.
We have a global portfolio of 20 operating units with mines in operation and development, and are among the largest iron ore producers in the world.
We currently have iron ore mining activities in Brazil, CIS countries including Kazakhstan, Mexico, and the United States. We also have coal mining activities in Kazakhstan and the United States. Our main mining products include iron ore lump, fines, concentrate, pellets, sinter feed, coking coal, and thermal coal.
In 2014, we produced and distributed 850,000 tonnes of iron ore and coking coal for manufacturers.
